Welcome to South Australia’s maritime heartland where you will find evocative seafaring history, a waterside state heritage area and the world’s only inner-city dolphins … and all only 20 minutes from Adelaide’s city centre.
The Port has some of the finest colonial and Victorian buildings in Australia. Take a walk along the docks and through the old Port to take in the ambience. Self-guided tours are available, including Kids Port Walks, or book a local volunteer tour guide.
The South Australian Maritime Museum, National Railway Museum and South Australian Aviation Museum are all located on Lipson Street and open daily … climb on board the old ketch, ride the steam train and check out the spitfire.
Next to the iconic lighthouse, the Sunday market is popular with those hunting collectables, books and bric-a-brac. The Port has some hidden treasures too … including galleries and cafés. Of course, being a port, heritage pubs abound!
Book yourself on a leisurely river boat cruise to see our famous Port River dolphins! Kayaking tours are another way to explore the rich marine environment, the abandoned wrecks of the ships’ graveyard and mangrove-lined tidal creeks.

The Port’s inner waterways are home to the only dolphins to inhabit an urban environment. Take a river cruise or self-drive the Port River Dolphin Trail and find out more about these wonderful wild mammals.
Walk the Port, the place where South Australian quite literally came ashore. The heritage buildings are amongst the nation’s finest, with structures dating back to 1849. Self guided tours are available, including Kids Port Walks, or book a local volunteer tour guide to discover the fascinating stories of Port Adelaide.
Enjoy fabulous, fresh food in one of the cosy cafés nestled in the Port’s State Heritage Area or watch the sunset over the sea... And pubs? Of course – this is a port! Get a serve of history and folklore, as well as great food and atmosphere, with the Port Heritage Pub Trail or book a brewery and cellar tour.
Ever experienced the confines of a 19th century ketch? Ever been up close to a WW2 Spitfire? Ever ridden on a steam train? Do it all in the “museum capital of SA”... home of the aviation, maritime, railway museums – all located on the same street in Port Adelaide!
If you like antiques, books and bric-a-brac, you’ll love the Sunday Market next to the Port’s iconic Lighthouse. Or check out the specialists in Aboriginal art and craft, South American flair, vinyl records, boutique wines …
Book a kayaking tour - the local waters are home to at least 25 wrecks, many of them visible above water. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including dolphins and pelicans. For a heady draught of seaside scenery, take the coastal path from Semaphore to North Haven.
Semaphore’s white sands, family-friendly shallows and colourful foreshore still make for a classic Adelaide beachside escape. Semaphore Road is one of Adelaide’s widest boulevards, stretching down to the jetty and sea. Funky boutiques have opened their doors alongside famous ‘old salt’ pubs, and contemporary cafes are serving seasonal produce whilst the night air is filled with the delicious aroma of fish ‘n’ chips.
