The STARS are registered Certification Trade Marks of AAA Tourism. No one except AAA Tourism, on behalf of Australia's Auto Clubs, is permitted to certify a STAR Rating to temporary accommodation properties (as specified in the registration) in Australia.
Some properties 'self-rate' themselves using all sorts of symbols such as diamonds, smiley faces and circles. This could be misleading to travellers as this “rating” is entirely subjective and cannot be substantiated.
AAA Tourism continually monitors the accuracy of STAR Ratings and properties claiming to be STAR Rated when they are not. Legal action is taken against properties where necessary.
